History of Buddha Purnima:

For many centuries, Vesak has been a traditional celebration in Mahayana Buddhism. According to the Theravada Tripitaka scriptures, in 563 BCE, Gautama Buddha was born in Lumbini. Today Lumbini is a part of Nepal. In 1950, Vesak was first observed as Buddha Purnima. This decision was taken at the first conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists. The celebration of Vesak was designated as Buddha Purnima in 1999. Vesak is a significant holiday for Buddhists. The day commemorates Buddha’s birth, death, and enlightenment. It is one of the most commonly observed celebrations in the Buddhist community.

About Gautama Buddha:

Gautama Buddha was born as Siddhartha Gautama to King Suddhodana. He was raised in great luxury. Since it was predicted at his birth that the prince would become a great emperor, he was kept isolated from the outside world so that he would not be influenced toward religious life. However, at the age of 29, the prince decided to see more of the world and began traveling through the palace grounds in his chariot. On his visits, he saw an old man, a sick man and a corpse.

Since Siddhartha Gautama was saved from the agonies of aging, disease, and death, his charioteer was compelled to reveal his identity. At the end of the journey, he came across a hermit and was struck by the man’s calm demeanor. So he went out into the world to see how the man could be so peaceful in the face of such pain all around him. He abandoned the castle to become a traveling ascetic.

He learned medicine from Alara Kalama and Udaraka Ramaputra, and he quickly grasped their systems. He attained a high level of mystical realization, but when he remained dissatisfied, he embarked on a quest for Nirvana, the greatest level of enlightenment.
He made a seat beneath a banyan tree and attempted to achieve enlightenment. He spoke about enlightenment and founded Buddhism after achieving it.
