Disney’s recently released animated film Strange World struggles to keep pace with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as it stumbles to a $4.2 million opening haul at the box office. The box office response is underwhelming compared to the $180 million budget of the action-adventure film.
Disney-Marvel’s superhero film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which was released last week, raked up an impressive $63 million over a five-day period while Strange World is on track to a lukewarm $24 million in the next five days. Disney’s previous animated film Encanto, which was released worldwide on 24 November 2021, earned around $40 million in its first week, which was considered an average earning at that time. Despite the underwhelming box office response, Strange World has generally favourable responses from the critics.
Encanto went on to win an Academy Award for best animated feature and won two other nominations for best original score and best original song. Strange World is based on a script written by Qui Nguyen and is directed by Don Hall, who is best known for co-directing films like Raya and the Last Dragon and Big Hero 6.
