It was a fair opening weekend for Ponniyin Selvan (PS)-2 [Hindi] as Rs. 8 crores came in. The film had a regular trajectory on Saturday and Sunday after opening at Rs. 2 crores, what with Sunday collections turning out to be Rs. 3.25 crores. Ideally, the film should have gone past the Rs. 4 crores mark as that would have given a good push to the overall number. However, the numbers are just about fair and that’s how one expects the rest of the weekdays to be as well.
If I talk about PS-1 [Hindi] then that film had collected Rs. 1.85 crores on its first day, gathered Rs. 7.60 crores over the weekend and then had Monday collections of Rs. 1.40 crores. Now, even though the weekend collections of PS-2 [Hindi] are marginally better, it would need to continue on the same path as PS-1 [Hindi], and hence its Hindi version is expected to get into that Rs. 1.50 crores zone at least. If that indeed turns out to be the case, then one could well exclaim that the film has been managing to hold on well. Post that too, the rest of the weekdays need to be good.
Since the beginning of 2023, none of the south releases have actually made an impact in Hindi, be it Sankranti releases Varisu and Thunivu or the last big release Dasara. Hence, the onus is on PS-2 to reverse this trend, more so since it’s a truly big screen affair that deserves to be seen in theatres.
