Uttar Pradesh: 8 drown during idol immersion at 7 sites; 2 electrocuted | Lucknow News – Times of India

LUCKNOW: At least eight people drowned while participating in immersion of Durga idols in seven separate incidents on Wednesday.
While three youths drowned in two separate incidents in Agra, two died in two separate incidents in Gorakhpur.
Another youth died in Phulpur area of Prayagraj after the immersion of Durga idol was completed.
Similarly, a 20-year-old man drowned in Rampur police station area of Jaunpur while another person died in Lalitpur.
In Barabanki, two persons were electrocuted at puja pandals in separate incidents when poor wiring led to current being passed on to steel railing set up for smooth flow of crowd within the pandal.
In another incident reported from Sant Kabir Nagar, eight sustained injuries after a group of men returning from Durga idol immersion on a tractor-trolley met with an accident.
In Rae Bareli, a home guard jawan was pushed into a river by local musclemen after he stopped them from immersing the idol into the river. He got minor injuries while two persons were later arrested for the crime.
Additional director general, law and order, Prashant Kumar said that overall the immersion of Durga idols in the state was peaceful while as many as 38,600 Durga puja pandals were erected across the state of which Durga idols from 35,960 were immersed as per the rituals till Thursday.
“For others, the district administration and police are helping to get immersion done,” Kumar added.
